Web 2.0 Rule: Protect Your Business

It's extremely easy in today's Web 2.0 era to purchase a domain name, the epicenter of any business's Internet presence. There are several companies that allow you to reasonably purchase a domain name at the click of a button. My favorite is Godaddy.com for their exceptional quality service, convenience, 24/7 access and using attractive models in their television commercials. ;)

A simple search on whois.net, allows anyone the opportunity to view the expiration date of any domain name and who the owner is (which is why I encourage people to pay the added fee for private registration. ...Unless you enjoy John Doe having access to your registered address and phone number).

If you plan on making a presence in this world either with a business, your personal endeavors or simply to a give shout out to your family ...you need to purchase at least the .com version of your name ...before someone else does.

I also encourage you to purchase the .net, .org, .info, .mobi extensions of your business or personal websites. If you don't your competition or someone else will, especially if your website receives a lot of traffic.

If you are an entrepreneur, domain acquisition is the wild wild west of today's day and age. ...although it's not so wild anymore.

Lets quickly look at one of my favorite examples:

Vodka.com, sold for $3 million USD (link to story). ...Yes, that's M-I-L-L-I-O-N

And ...last summer Dictionary.com sold for $100 million USD (link to story).

It's difficult to find these jewels anymore, buy you can be surprised what you may find. ...Just use a little imagination.

Good luck hunting.
