Honored to present the Mark Tiner Memorial Scholarship with my  family. This year, we recognized three hardworking graduates in my brother’s memory—students whose character and drive reflect the values he lived by. Over the last 20 years, I’m grateful we can continue Mark’s memory by supporting the next generation and sharing this special tradition with loved ones.

2014 Mark Tiner Foundation Scholarship Recipient Some of you may not know, but my brother, Mark Tiner passed away 10 years ago. Shortly after he passed away, I organized some fundraisers to help create memorial scholarships in his honor. Each year a memorial scholarship and volleyball spirit award is awarded at Laguna Beach High School in his honor. Additionally, since 2006 a financial needs scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior from Orange County, CA. It’s a rewarding and bittersweet way to pay it forward and continue Mark’s name. Last month, My fiance and I presented the financial needs scholarship to a graduating high school senior from Savanna High School in Anaheim.  Savanna High School, Anaheim, CA Paying it forward and treating each day as a gift is one of the biggest lessons that I've learned from it all. Pete Carroll: Paying it Forward

Image
(Sean & Pete Carroll) One of my brother’s goals was to pursue his undergraduate studies at The University of Southern California (USC). Although his life was tragically cut short, my family was fortunate to have his dream formally acknowledged at his memorial in 2004. At his funeral our pastor informed my family that on our behalf he had contacted USC and told them about my brother’s dream. The admissions office said that my brother embodied USC's character, spirit and would have been an excellent candidate. An admissions dean then contacted Coach Carroll who mailed our pastor an autographed football with the words “Fight On! In Memory of Mark Tiner .” The football was presented to me at the memorial and stands as my most cherished possession. The words “Fight On! In memory of Mark Tiner” have helped me endure different stages of grief. They remind me about the goals, passion and energy that my brother exemplified. The slogan “Fight on,” helps me battle through the agonizi...
