The Second 2008 Mark P. Tiner Memorial Financial Needs Scholarship

For the glamorous boutiques of South Coast Plaza to the diverse neighborhoods of Santa Ana, CA, Orange County, CA is home to a distinct culture. The lifestyles epitomized on MTV's Laguna Beach and The OC only represent a small fraction of the population. There is a lot of need, hardworking people and deserving youth in our community.

This morning, I was excited to surprise John F. Kennedy High School in La Palma, CA and present the second OC Financial Needs Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. The money was raised from recent and generous contributions. I presented the $1,000 scholarship and awarded a graduating high school senior who (I learned today) will be attending The University of Southern California!

Betsy Jenkins, a Laguna Beach Unified School District Board Member and board member of The Mark P. Tiner Education Foundation, joined me for the presentation. I was really excited to present the award and allow my brother's memory to continue through an industrious student pursuing higher education.

Over 60 applicants were received for this year's financial needs scholarships, which are open to graduating high school seniors in Orange County, CA. The scholarship award is provided by support from community contributions and the recipient is selected by The Mark P. Tiner Education Foundation Board.

In addition to the award, I presented the student with a print of one of my stylized portraits. She was really exited to receive both the award and print.

I also wore one of my original ties and jackets.
