2021 Mark Tiner Memorial Scholarship
We reviewed dozens of applications from incredible students and ultimately selected a hardworking and humble student. Upon first glance, the recipient had below average grades, but that only told part of his story. When we looked past his grades, we noticed that English was his second language and he had challenged himself by taking advanced math and English classes. Additionally, he worked hard to support his family and volunteered throughout high school.
Sometimes, we may put too much emphasis on certain quantitative criteria, such has having straight As or certain degrees. However, that may only tell part of a person’s story. This year’s recipient reinforced the joy in trying new challenges and how it’s important to recognize people’s courage, determination, and overall resilient spirit.
